Full Description
much of the iconography, the palette, and the closure slot technique* of Inalu weavings is identical to Afshar work. Frequently the only difference is the structure; the Afshar employ both the symmetric knot and the asymmetric knot open right while the Inalu employ the asymmetric knot open left exclusively. This bag exemplifies the point. I might add that I have seen Afshar soumaks with this design but have yet to see one from the Inalu. The similarity of the weavings between these 2 tribes may be explained by the fact that through much of their history they were fellow travelers. The dyes are pristine.
*though not in the case of this bag. Usually the closure slot panels of both tribes are a chevron design executed in soumak. This particular bag is rare in that it has pile panels and the Fars signature at the bottom is also pile rather than reverse weft float (see detail images above).
